Our History

August Lofholm was born in Norway, Michigan on April 3rd, 1907. In 1944 August married Lucille Sundquist and started a sawmill operation approximately 3 miles outside of Norway near Piers Gorge. The sawmill was known as the August Lofholm Lumber Mill.
In addition to cutting logs and selling lumber, August began to take orders and deliver roofing with a 1935 Ford truck. That same truck is now featured in many local parades.

In 1953, August opened a lumber yard next to Ebeling’s IGA on Main Street in Norway. It was quite a sight to see full size semi’s parked on Main Street and even more of a challenge unloading them.

August’s two boys became interested in the business at an early age. Robert joined in 1967 and Dave joined in 1971 after graduating from Michigan Tech. Both are currently co-owners.

By the mid 1970’s expansion was necessary. Land was purchased on West US2, the site of our current location. A new facility with expanded product lines and warehousing provided a foundation for the incredible growth we’ve experienced.

In the late 70’s we became a member owner of the Our Own Hardware buying cooperative. This allowed us to offer an even wider selection of building materials and hardware at very competitive prices.

Various additions and remodeling occurred over the next twenty years. In 1995 Lofholm’s Rent It Center was created to supply rental equipment for do it yourselfer’s and contractor’s.

In 1997 Our Own Hardware merged with HWI (Hardware Wholesalers, Inc.) to create a buying cooperative of over 4,100 independent stores. This was a significant moment for it led to the creation of Do It Best Corp, the current name of that cooperative. Do It Best was responsible for over 3 billion dollars in purchases last year. Buying power like this allows us to compete with anyone.

In the fall of 1999 we began a major renovation which resulted in our current facility. The expansion added room for over 6,700 new products. The interior and exterior were remodeled and the entire store was re-merchandised.

The Rental Center was expanded and a repair garage was added. Next, we created a truly fantastic showroom. The end result was a 14,000 square foot state of the art facility with over 20,000 products in stock. We regularly receive compliments on what a beautiful store we have.

Bob and Cindy have three children active in the business: Don, Debbie, and Gary. All three worked in the business throughout high school and college.

Don received a degree in education from Northern Michigan University in 1990, taught in Milwaukee, and entered the business full time in 1992.

Debbie attended Northern Michigan University for 3 years, began raising a family, and entered the business in 1992 once her children were of school age.

After graduating from Northern Michigan University in 2000, Gary taught elementary school in Crivitz, WI. In 2006 Gary joined the family business.

Our family is friendly, we’re honest, and we have integrity. Those core traits have been the foundation of our family and business. We are proud of what this business has accomplished, we remain dedicated to making it even better, and we look forward to the future.
